STORYLINE:

Maltese swimmer Neil Agius embarked on a 160-km open-water swim around the islands of Malta and Gozo on Saturday, aiming to break the world record he currently holds. The ultra-endurance athlete expects to spend three days in the water.

During the swim, Agius will eat and drink every 30 minutes, remaining in the water without making physical contact with any of the support boats accompanying him.

According to local media, Agius will set a new world record for the longest non-stop, unassisted, current-neutral sea swim if successful. He previously swam 125.7 km from Linosa, Sicily, to Malta in 2021, setting the existing record.
