The Kilauea volcano in Hawaii erupted as a new vent opened on the surface.

Officials said the new fissure vent was located west of Napau Crater, making it the fourth vent to emerge on September 18.

Footage shows a river of lava over 50 metres wide spewing across the crater's rugged terrain and covering nearly 125 acres of land.

The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said the flow has an estimated rate of five to 15 cubic metres per second. Though the area is far from residential places, scientists are using aerial and ground-based technologies to monitor volcanic activity and predict potential hazards.

Kilauea is one of the most active volcanoes in the world.
