This is the heartwarming moment dozens of cats and dogs were rescued from abuse in North Carolina.

Caldwell County Animal Care and Enforcement, along with the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), retrieved 60 animals confined in stacked cages within a cramped, 960-square-foot residence in Lenoir on September 5.

Footage shows volunteers entering the premises with malnourished dogs caged in.

The team transported 55 dogs and four cats to their care and rehabilitation centre in Maryland to provide medical assessments, treatments, and daily care, with the aim of preparing the animals for adoption or transferring them to partner shelters.

Richard Gilliland, director of Caldwell County Animal Care and Enforcement, said: 'When the HSUS steps in, we're confident that the animals receive top-tier treatment, allowing us to continue serving our community effectively.'

Two individuals are facing charges of 59 counts of animal cruelty.
