Winnie the Pooh mascot collapses after being struck on head by tourist at Shanghai Disneyland
A member of staff wearing a Winnie the Pooh costume collapsed after a tourist struck the mascot of the head at Shanghai Disneyland on September 22.
According to eyewitnesses, the man appeared to be upset with the mascot performer, leading to his impulsive action. The headpiece of the Disney mascot contains a metal framework to support and replicate head movements, so even minor external impacts can potentially harm the performer. After being struck, the mascot performer showed immediate signs of discomfort.
In response to the incident, Shanghai Disneyland strongly condemned the inappropriate behaviour of the guest. The park emphasised that all staff members deserve respect and that visitors should follow park rules to ensure a harmonious and safe environment. The park has also increased monitoring of guest behaviour to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
In July 2017, the Chinese government has been censoring imagery of Winnie the Pooh due online communities using the Disney character to mock the country's President Xi Jinping.
