DeLand, United States - September 20, 2024

A routine traffic stop on Interstate 4 escalated into one of the largest drug busts in recent memory for Volusia County, leading to the seizure of approximately 4 kilograms of MDMA and an array of other illicit substances.

The incident began late Friday night when deputies responded to a report of a disabled vehicle near the 107-mile marker on westbound I-4. Upon arrival, officers encountered Carey Thomas Crownover, 30, of DeLand, who was inside the vehicle causing a disturbance. During the confrontation, Crownover violently resisted arrest, assaulting Deputy Graham in the process.

A search of the vehicle uncovered a staggering 1,426 grams of MDMA, 1,016 grams of amphetamine, 4 grams of ketamine, and cannabis. This discovery prompted authorities to execute a search warrant at Crownover's residence in DeLand.

The raid at the home yielded even more drugs, including an additional 2,516 grams of MDMA, 363 grams of cocaine, 1,000 grams of psilocybin, 510 grams of amphetamine, along with various other substances like alprazolam, 2C, LSD, and more cannabis. The operation also led to the seizure of 11 firearms, one of which was reported stolen from Lake County.

Carey Thomas Crownover faces a litany of charges including armed trafficking in MDMA, amphetamines, and cocaine, along with charges for possession with intent to sell, resisting arrest with violence, and battery on a law enforcement officer. His father, Carey David Crownover, residing at the same address, was arrested for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

The driver of the vehicle was also taken into custody on charges related to drug possession and paraphernalia.
