US: Japan, China should seek sound, steady development of ties
New York, United States - September 23, 2024
China and Japan should work together to promote the sound and steady development of bilateral relations, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said in New York City on Monday.
Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, met with his Japanese counterpart Yoko Kamikawa at the latter's invitation.
Wang said that it is the common responsibility of both sides to comprehensively promote the strategic and mutually beneficial relationship between China and Japan. The Chinese side hopes that Japan would work with China to grasp the correct direction of bilateral relations, implement the consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, and promote the sound and steady development of China-Japan relations.
Kamikawa said that Japan attaches importance to Japan-China relations. In the face of rising risks and challenges in the international situation, Japan and China should maintain communication and dialogue in all fields and at all levels, including negotiation to solve the problem of nuclear contaminated water and jointly safeguard regional peace and development.
The important foundation of bilateral relations lies in the exchanges between the people. He hopes that China would properly handle the attack on a Japanese student in southern Chinese city of Shenzhen and ensure the safety of Japanese in China.
Wang stressed that it is natural for China to oppose the discharge of nuclear contaminated water from Fukushima, Japan. Since Japan has agreed to accept long-term international monitoring arrangements and independent sampling and monitoring by China and other stakeholders, it should do what it says and not make unnecessary trouble.
China will investigate and handle the individual case of the attack on the Japanese student in Shenzhen in accordance with the law, and will, as always, safeguard the safety of all foreign citizens in China in accordance with the law. Japan should view this calmly and rationally and avoid politicizing or escalating the issue, Wang noted.
