Kenya: Kenyan Public University Lecturers Begin Strike After Failed Negotiations
Nairobi, Kenya - September 24, 2024
A day after last-ditch efforts between university lecturers and key stakeholders to prevent an impending strike failed, lecturers from several Kenyan universities have gone on strike.
The academic staff followed through on their threat after their unions, the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) and the Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU), called for industrial action over the government's failure to meet their demands.
Lecturers from different institutions took to the streets as the strike commenced, just days after students had suspended their own protests against the new higher education funding model following government intervention.
