Italy - September 24, 2024

The region of Veneto is grappling with severe weather conditions, with firefighters and emergency services responding to over 280 incidents across the region since last night. The brunt of the storm has been felt most intensely in the provinces of Padova, Treviso, and Vicenza.

In Vicenza alone, 102 interventions were recorded, with Treviso following closely with 90 calls for help, and Padova and Venice each seeing about 50 incidents. The hardest-hit areas include Tombolo and Viggiano Mestrino in Padova, Torri di Quartesolo and Arcugnano in Vicenza, and Castelfranco Veneto and Asolo in Treviso.

The emergency teams have been dealing with flooded underpasses, basement water damage, fallen trees, and structural instability. In a particularly dire situation in Padova province, three rivers—the Tergola, Piovego, and Valdura—overflowed their banks. This led to the evacuation of 11 people from their homes in Loreggia as a precautionary measure against further flooding.

The unexpected ferocity of the storm has left local authorities and residents on high alert, with continuous efforts to mitigate the damage and ensure public safety. The Veneto region is bracing for more potential issues as the clean-up begins and emergency services remain on standby for any further escalation of the weather-induced crisis.
