Noise dispute at late-night snack stall leads to clashes and detentions in China
In the early hours of September 23, a conflict stemming from noise pollution at a late-night snack stall escalated into a disturbing incident in Chengdu, southern China, leaving six individuals facing administrative detentions.
According to reports, the cacophony emanating from the bustling snack stall persisted well into the wee hours of the morning, severely disrupting the rest of residents living above. Ms. Sun, a 71-year-old woman residing in one of the apartments above, could no longer tolerate the incessant noise and resorted to pouring water onto the snack stall below as a protest.
However, this act of frustration only fueled the ire of patrons dining at the stall. In retaliation, they hurled bottles and other debris upwards, shattering windows of the apartments and damaging furniture within. The violent response left the upper floors littered with broken glass and debris.
Upon receiving reports of the disturbance, local police swiftly intervened and conducted a thorough investigation. Consequently, five patrons of the snack stall, along with a passerby named Mu, were found guilty of throwing objects, including bottles, towards the residential units. They were subsequently detained under administrative detention measures in accordance with the law.
Meanwhile, Ms. Sun, the upstairs resident who initiated the confrontation, was given a stern reprimand and educational counseling due to mitigating factors such as the provocation she faced, the relatively minor nature of her actions, and her subsequent remorse and apology.
