Florianopolis, Brazil - September 21, 2024

These images show a dolphin being rescued after it became tangled in a fishing net off the coast of Brazil.

The images, obtained from the Santa Catarina Environmental Military Police, show them pulling the net to the surface to reveal a struggling dolphin desperately thrashing around in a bid to free itself from the net off the coast of Florianopolis, a tourist hotspot in the Baia Sul region, on Saturday, 21st September.

The video shows one of the military police officers pulling the net to the surface before his colleague cuts through the net with a large military-issue knife.

The footage ends with the dolphin finally being freed and diving as it escapes.

They did not say where exactly the nets were located but said that their use is a crime in the area, which is protected.

The police seized the net as evidence and are investigating the incident.

Local media said that "environmental crime" in Brazil can come with a penalty of up to three years in prison and a hefty fine.
