A giant rat snake caused a stir in an Indonesian household when it slithered into the kitchen on Wednesday (September 25, 2024). The terrified homeowner called in local reptile enthusiasts for help.

The brown-colored snake, estimated to be around 1.5 meters long, was spotted descending from the ceiling via an electrical cable before disappearing into a pile of buckets behind the dish rack.

Ira, the homeowner, was too frightened to continue cooking and immediately contacted the reptile rescue team.

The rescue team arrived promptly and located the snake hiding behind the buckets. With swift and expert handling, they safely captured the non-venomous reptile.

B.W Syawaldi, a volunteer from the B-Reptanic, Bukittinggi Reptile Lovers Community, explained that rat snakes, in Indonesia also known as coffee snakes, are commonly found in rice paddies and often enter homes in search of rodents.

"This is called a rat snake, or coffee snake, non-venomous, safe. It was seen entering from the attic and then going down towards the kitchen. This snake's habitat is generally in rice fields, coincidentally behind this is also a rice field,' Waldi added.

The snakes were put in sacks to be carried and released into their habitat far from settlements.

Reptile lovers recommend sealing gaps in homes, using mothballs or other strong-smelling substances, and keeping outdoor areas tidy to deter snakes.
