Terrified passengers were delayed when smoke was seen pouring from an Emirates Boeing 777 flying from India to Dubai.

The aircraft was refuelling when the incident happened ahead of flight EK547 from the Chennai International Airport on Tuesday evening, September 24.

Onlookers said the smoke was coming from the General Electric GE90 engine on the aircraft, which has the registration A6-ECZ. Around 320 passengers were forced to wait past the scheduled departure of 10 pm until the flight finally departed at 00:30.

Airport fire crews quickly extinguished the smoke and the situation was brought under control within 10 minutes.

An Emirates spokesman said the flight was delayed due to a technical fault. He said that after engineering inspection, the aircraft was cleared to fly to the Dubai International Airport.

Emirates apologised to the passengers for the inconvenience. The spokesperson said that the safety of passengers and crew is of utmost importance.

Emirates, which is owned by the Dubai government, operates a fleet of Boeing 777s and Airbus A380s.
