Chinese company makes breakthroughs in rare-earth exploration

(Voice_over)

Specialists from the China Rare Earth Group recently announced the discovery of nearly five million tons of rare-earth elements in Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture in southwest China's Sichuan Province.

There are 17 rare earth metals, which are sometimes called the "vitamins of modern society", because they're so widely used in everything from flat-screen TVs to lasers to hybrid vehicles.

Specialists from the group said the find marks a significant contribution to safeguarding China's rare earth resources.

China holds the world's largest reserves of rare earths and is also its largest producer.

Data from China's General Administration of Customs shows that the country exported about 52,000 tons of rare earths last year, a seven percent increase from the year prior.
