Tropical Storm John sparks floods in Acapulco, Mexico
Tropical Storm John sparked flooding, inundating streets in Acapulco, Mexico.
Footage shows police traffic units from the State Secretariat of Public Safety (SSPGro) assisting vehicles on flooded roadways on Thursday, September 26.
They also participated in cleanup efforts, removing debris and waste left behind by the storm, which has submerged parts of the city.
Officials reported that some areas received over 500 mm of rain this week, with 431 mm falling in just the past 24 hours.
After striking Mexico as a deadly Category 3 hurricane on Monday night, the storm weakened before reemerging as a hurricane, impacting Mexico's Pacific coast. Even after losing strength, its remnants continued to bring persistent rainfall along the coast.
Mudslides claimed the lives of three individuals in Guerrero, as reported by authorities: two victims in the small town of Tlacoachistlahuaca and another in the mountainous municipality of Malinaltepec.
Governor Evelyn Salgado Pineda has urged residents of Guerrero to exercise extreme caution during these weather conditions. She advised locals to stay informed through official channels and to avoid unnecessary travel to prevent accidents and ensure their safety.
Last year, Acapulco suffered severe damage from Hurricane Otis, which caused over 50 fatalities and around $15 billion in damages.
