SOUNDBITE (English): ZURAB POLOLIKASHVILI, Secretary-General of the United Nations World Tourism Organization
"Wherever you are and however you are celebrating on this World Tourism Day, I wish you all peace and prosperity. The global tourist family is broad and diverse, but what unites us is our shared humanity. Ours is the most humane sector. Every journey leads to a connection. Tourism brings the world together and closer. Tourism builds trust and respect. It lays the foundations for cooperation, and it drives inclusive growth and prosperity, and safeguards against conflict. We need these values now more than ever.
Above all, let us work together as a sector united to make tourism a beacon of hope, and ensure that when peace does return to areas of conflict, we are ready to help people rebuild and reconnect. Let us take this occasion to set the tone for future generations: let us recommit to multilateralism, respect for international law and the values of the United Nations."
Inaugurated by the UN in 1980, World Tourism Day aims to raise awareness of the positive role tourism can play in fostering understanding and peace among different cultures.
This year's official celebrations will take place in Tbilisi, Georgia's capital, on Friday, featuring a series of discussions on topics such as "Tourism as a Catalyst for Sustainable Peace," "Building Bridges Through Tourism," and "Tourism as a Driver of Global Peace."
Meanwhile, cultural shows, educational programs, and workshops promoting tourism will be held around the world.
