"I gave birth in my bathroom on my own - my husband didn't have a clue"
A woman gave birth alone on her bathroom floor in just 45 minutes - before her husband had a chance to set up the birthing pool.
Teagan Swoboda, 36, woke up up on August 11, 2024, at 5:45am experiencing contractions.
She went to the bathroom to time them and woke her husband up 15 minutes later.
Tony Swoboda, 41, went downstairs to set up the home birth equipment.
Around 6:30am, Teagan called Tony to let him know the baby was coming but he couldn't hear the phone as he was setting up the pool.
At 6:36am, Teagan gave birth to Elliot, now six weeks old, weighing 8lb 8oz in her bathroom after delivering her on her own.
Teagan, a nurse, from Wasilla, Alaska, said: "Around 6:30am I called Tony again and told him he needed to start filling up the pool as it was happening fast."
"Six minutes later, I had already given birth to Elliot on my own - it was terrifying."
"I didn't have time to process it, I was in shock."
"My husband came upstairs when the bath was ready, he walked into the bathroom and saw that my water had broken."
"He got a little lightheaded and said everything was ready - I said yeah great, but look what I have got'."
"He was in absolute shock."
Teagan found out she was expecting in December 2023.
She said it came as a shock as the pair were not trying at the time after previously giving birth to four boys, Alexander, 16, Brayden, 13, Colby, 10, and Delfin, two.
Teagan said that this was the most difficult pregnancy as she struggled with morning sickness and pain towards the end of the pregnancy.
She said: "Towards the end, I was in a lot of pain, I felt like she was in an uncomfortable position."
"I had very bad morning sickness in the beginning which I didn't have with my boys."
"We didn't find out the gender until she was born so I would joke that she had to be a girl because my boys would never treat me this way."
On August 11, 2024, Teagan woke up around 5:45am after experiencing contractions.
She went to the bathroom, leaving Tony in bed and timed her contractions.
Teagan said: "I was thinking that if it was going to be a long day I wanted him to be rested."
"I woke him up around 6am when I realised the baby was coming and asked him to set up my water birth."
"Around 6:30am I called him again to tell him that things were happening fast."
Six minutes later, Teagan gave birth to Elliot on her own in her bathroom.
She said: "I couldn't even get to the bathtub in front of me - I struggled walking."
"I gave birth to her on my own which was terrifying."
"I was trying to catch her head and hold an arm."
"I held her head and hooked my arm under her armpit."
"When she came out I laid her down on the toilet to pick her up."
"I laid her on me, she cried and I rubbed her back - I was just staring at her, it was like time stood still."
A few minutes later, Tony ran upstairs to tell Teagan that the water birth was ready.
He soon realised he was too late after walking into the bathroom and seeing that her water had broken.
Teagan said: "He could see that my waters had broken and got a little lightheaded."
"He was trying not to look and said how everything was ready."
"Once he came in the room he was in absolute shock, I sat there with her and he got our boys so they could meet her."
"We waited until the midwife came and got into bed - we were able to stay home."
Teagan said Elliot is "perfect" and she is just as "sweet" as her boys."
She said: "She is perfect, she is so sweet - just as sweet as the boys just pink."
"It was so different for them to change the pronouns, they were used to saying 'he' and 'buddy' which is cute."
"They are all such good brothers, they appreciate how little she is and every noise Elliot makes."
