STORYLINE:

Auto industry leaders and experts have praised the rapid development of Chinese electric vehicles (EV) and voiced opposition against trade protectionism at the 2024 World New Energy Vehicle Congress (WNEVC) held in south China's Haikou.

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): ELIZABETH CONNELLY, Energy Technology and Transport Analyst at International Energy Agency (IEA)
"So I think we've seen really impressive growth in the Chinese EV or NEV market.
And so I think China is really leading the way in terms of affordability and of course that has somewhat to do with the developments in the battery sector as well. So we're seeing a lot of cost reductions there and changes in chemistry that make the EVs more affordable. So it has big implications, I think, for the global picture as well."

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): OLIVER BLUME, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG
"Over the past four decades, we take great pride in having become an integral part of Chinese life and in shaping the development of the Chinese automotive industry. These collaborations have allowed us to serve 50 million customers, open almost 40 factories and employ 90,000 colleagues. During this period, we have witnessed the remarkable progress of China, and we are immensely proud to have been a part of this journey."

SOUNDBITE 3 (English): JOCHEN GOLLER, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Customer, Brands, Sales
"BMW is clearly supporting free trade. You can see here we have a global value stream. We are buying products or we selling and producing products in China, for China. BMW is very committed here to using its influence to keep the market open. And we would love to have also more Chinese battery manufacturers in Europe. So that's a very clear commitment from BMW towards free trade."
