Northern Chinese province of Hebei leads steel sector's green transition

Steel manufacturers in north China's Hebei Province, where one-fifth of the country's steel production is carried out, are taking steps towards smarter and greener production practices.

The province is home to 37 companies that have received an A rating for their environmental practices, like Tangsteel, a subsidiary of China's iron and steel manufacturing conglomerate HBIS Group.

At one of their factories, highly automated production lines make high-strength aluminized steel plate.

At just 1.5 millimeters thick but with a strength of 2,000 megapascals (MPa), it's often used to make anti-collision beams for cars and trucks.

Elsewhere in the province, another subsidiary of HBIS Group, ShiSteel, is undergoing an intelligent and green upgrade of their own.

The company began using robots to streamline production and has achieved zero wastewater discharge.

Meanwhile, it collects and treats urban wastewater to a standard suitable for fish farming and horticulture.
