STORYLINE:

Bangladeshi authorities held a fair in Dhaka on Sunday to promote eco-friendly alternatives to polythene, as polythene and polypropylene bags will be banned at all supermarkets from Oct. 1 and in other markets from Nov. 1 in the South Asian country.

The fair, with 24 stalls, featured environment-friendly products such as reusable bags, jute bags, paper bags and products made from bamboo and cane by dozens of government and private entrepreneurs.

The day-long fair was part of various efforts to promote eco-friendly alternatives to polythene shopping bags.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Bengali): MONIRA ZEBIN SATHI, Entrepreneur
"We're making our best efforts to produce eco-friendly products to create a polythene-free country. Since it has been announced in our country that polythene cannot be used at all, we are trying to make jute cotton or different types of cotton bags. Another goal is to make the young generation interested more for using this jute bag. The kind of prints that we provide on the jute cotton bags is attracting the younger generation to use our products."

SOUNDBITE 2 (Bengali): NASREEN AKHTAR MILA, Entrepreneur
"One more important information I want to give is the easy availability of raw materials for this, we need to build a raw materials processing unit in Bangladesh which is huge investment. What I personally feel is that Chinese investors are very supportive of these eco-friendly productions."

Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Dhaka.
