This is the moment a driver's quick reaction helped him avoid hitting two running girls, but police fined him anyway.

The incident occurred in Munaily District, southwestern Kazakhstan, on September 25.

Surveillance camera footage shows a relatively empty road and two schoolgirls approaching a pedestrian crossing.

The video reveals this is an unregulated crossing with no traffic lights or warning signs - just a zebra walkway.

As the girls run onto the crossing, a car suddenly appears. The driver reacts quickly, braking hard and swerving left to avoid the children before skidding to a stop.

While this manoeuvre prevented an accident, it did not spare the driver from a fine.

Munaily district police said: 'There was no call, appeal, or complaint from any of those involved.

'The police officers themselves identified the offender.

'The driver of the Toyota Hilux was brought to administrative responsibility for the facts of failure to give priority to pedestrians and violation of traffic rules by a road user, resulting in the creation of an emergency situation.'
