A pink dolphin stranded on a beach during low tide was rescued by locals.

The Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin with the beautiful shade was spotted by residents stuck in the shallows before being saved in a DIY operation in Satun province, Thailand's Bu Boi beach, on September 30.

Footage shows the marine animal weighing 23.6st (150kg) lying on the sand, being swept by waves.

Residents Yomart Meensan, Abdonmanub Kanui, and Ongart Saemood tied a rope around its body and gently dragged it back to the deeper part of the water as the low tide came.

The unusually-coloured dolphin shook its tail and became seemingly excited to swim when it reached the depths.

Village officer Sombat Sanmae said: ‘The dolphin had two small wounds on the base of its tail and belly. Its eyes also had sand.'

Sombat added that the dolphin looked tired, having been stranded for at least four hours, but it could swim fine.

He said: ‘It took 20 minutes to return the dolphin safely because it was too heavy, and we did not want to hurt it.

‘It might have followed its pod and became stranded when the water level lowered.'

Another village officer, Watthana Gobmeng, said it was the first time a pink dolphin was seen on their beach.

He said: ‘Fishermen encounter large pods of more than ten dolphins daily while going to sea or sometimes see them in pairs.

‘However, it was the first time we have seen a pink dolphin like that.'

The Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin is listed as 'Vulnerable' on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. They are often known for their distinct pink colouration, although as calves, they are grey and develop the hue as they age.
