Shocking footage shows the aftermath of a lorry which crashed and plummeted off a motorway bridge.

The vehicle fell from Thelwall Viaduct on the M6 near Warrington, Cheshire, at about 6.50pm yesterday (Monday).

Shocking images from the scene show the wreckage, which has been split into two, lying in the middle of the motorway.

Other photographs show workers with a recovery lorry, preparing to remove the wreckage.

A Cheshire Police spokesperson said the driver isn't believed to have suffered any life-threatening injuries.

They said: "Shortly after 6.50pm on Monday 30 September, police were called to reports of an incident on the M6 northbound at Thelwall Viaduct, between junction 20 and 21."

"Officers attended the scene and found a lorry had come off the carriageway and landed on the embankment below the bridge."

"The driver of the lorry is not believed to have suffered any life-threatening injuries."

National Highways said two of the four northbound lanes remained closed between junctions 20 and 21.
