Nigerian President Bola Tinubu vowed Tuesday that his administration was taking action to reduce the elevated cost of living amid current economic hardship.
Speaking in a national broadcast to mark the country's 64th independence anniversary, Tinubu said the central concern of the Nigerian people remains the cost of living, especially food costs.
The Nigerian president noted that this concern is shared by many around the globe as prices and the cost of living continue to rise.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): BOLA TINUBU, Nigerian President
"My fellow Nigerians, please be assured that we are implementing many measures to reduce the cost of living here at home."
After taking the country's leadership for over 16 months, Tinubu said the economy faced many headwinds, and physical security was highly impaired.
According to him, the government was "at a dizzying crossroads," where a path must be chosen between reform for progress and prosperity, and carrying on with the business as usual that could lead to a collapse.
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): BOLA TINUBU, Nigerian President
"We decided to reform our political economy and defense architecture. Fellow Nigerians, while we are working to stabilize the economy and secure the country, we also seek to foster national unity and build social harmony and cohesion."
