A zoo tiger 'killed' its toy sheep and tore it apart before making off with its skin.

Footage shows Stepan, an Amur tiger in Russia, approaching the fake animal and quickly shredding the toy he was gifted on Amur Tiger Day. The video captures the beast playing with the phony sheep's skin on Sunday, September 29.

The Moscow Zoo said: 'The holiday was initiated by public environmental organisations: the Phoenix Fund, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), and the European Association of Zoos, to draw attention to the catastrophic decline in the population of these animals. It has been observed since 2000 on the fourth Sunday of September.

'The Amur tiger is a rare, endangered subspecies, listed in the Red Book of Russia and the IUCN Red List.

'The Far Eastern leopard, the northernmost subspecies of leopard, is on the verge of complete extinction.

'At the Yekaterinburg Zoo today, this holiday was celebrated with demonstration feedings of Amur tigers Juna and Jagar, and Far Eastern leopards Amur and Shilka.'
