The Virginia State Police helicopters saved dozens stranded on a hospital roof in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.

Police aircraft, alongside Ballad Health and the Tennessee National Guard, conducted a high-stakes rescue operation on September 27, saving around 54 individuals trapped by floodwaters on top of the Unicoi County Hospital.

Two helicopters from the state's aviation unit in Abingdon, Virginia, airlifted approximately 40 to 45 people to safety.

A spokesman for the rescue operation said: 'The coordination between the Virginia State Police, Ballad Health, and the Tennessee National Guard was nothing short of extraordinary.

'This is a testament to the readiness and capability of our emergency services to respond in the most challenging circumstances.'

Hurricane Helene has claimed more than 100 lives and caused extensive damage to roads and bridges, resulting in severe flooding from Florida to Virginia.

Authorities stated that damage estimates ranged from 15 billion USD to over 100 billion USD as water systems, communications, and critical transportation routes were affected.
