A Chinese envoy on Wednesday called for effective measures to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of the Palestinian people.

China is paying close attention to the human rights situation in the occupied Palestinian and other Arab territories, said Chen Xu, China's permanent representative to the UN Office in Geneva and other international organizations in Switzerland, at the general debate of the 57th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council on the human rights situation in Palestine and other occupied Arab territories.

China calls for an immediate and lasting ceasefire, an end to any actions that would aggravate tensions and escalate the situation in the region, and the effective relief of the humanitarian disaster in Gaza, said Chen.

The international community should earnestly safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of the Palestinian people, and convene a more comprehensive, authoritative and effective international peace conference led and organized by the United Nations as soon as possible to work out a specific timetable and a road map for the implementation of the two-state solution, so as to promote a comprehensive, just and lasting settlement of the Palestinian question, said Chen.

China is ready to work with the international community to make unremitting efforts to this end, Chen added.
