The Midland Metropolitan Hospital in Smethwick, near Birmingham, England is to open on Sunday 6th October 2024, six years late.

The super hospital site, costing 988 Million Pounds, was expected to be finished in October 2018 before the construction company Carillion collapsed into administration.

The hospital, located 4 miles from Birmingham city centre, was then plagued with problems after a crane collapsed into the building during construction in 2019 and then the site was affected by coronavirus delays with a second delivery date of 2022 also passed.

The facade also had to be replaced in the wake of new fire safety regulations, as a result of these fresh delays, planned opening dates in early 2023 and 2024 were also missed.

Patients will be transferred from 3 hospitals including the Victorian 'City Hospital' on Dudley Road which is set to be demolished and converted into homes.
