Rescue mission to free dog trapped in rocks reaches eighth day
Good Samaritans who are battling to save a dog that became encased in a rock crevice have reached the eighth day of their rescue mission.
The Jack Russell, called Rose, tumbled roughly 26ft (8m) through a 12-inch (30cm) opening in the rocky outcrop last Thursday (Sept 26).
Firefighters were called twice to the site, near Dudley Crescent, Halifax, West Yorks., but chose not to intervene due to worries over the ‘structural integrity' of the crag.
So local workers, some of whom have been sleeping at the site, have spent the last week working day and night to free the mutt before it's too late.
One of the volunteers, Ben Kitchingman, who has led the operation, was only torn away from the mission to see the birth of his child before coming back to help.
Writing on Facebook, the dog's owner previously said she was amazed at the work of the lads who had donated their time to help save Rose.
She said: "As everyone is probably aware, my family pet Rose fell into the cliffs near my home. "
"Ben didn't know myself Luke, or Rose, but he has come out of his way from Bradford bringing only himself his van and tools."
"Ben has slept in his van for the last 3 nights. He's worked as if Rose was his own dog. We as a family will forever be grateful."
The team have been able to get food and water to Rose through a crack in the rock despite being stuck.
One of the locals who lives close to the site and wanted to remain anonymous said she was stunned by the scale of the ongoing rescue effort.
She said: "Rescue truck and transit as well as fire engines were down there not long after it happened and came back Friday but said nothing could be done - same with mountain rescue "
"So the local lads have been there day and night with jackhammers and Stihl saws."
"It's very hard, but she's still alive. "
"They heard her this morning, she's got into a hole but it has a shear drop inside of around 10ft."
A spokesperson from West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service (WYFRS) previously said they had decided they could not help with the rescue operation.
They said: "WYFRS were called to the scene twice(on the 26th and 27th of September), where our technical rescue unit tried to locate the dog."
"On the first occasion, there was no sign of the animal except barking, so we left the scene in the hands of the dog's owner."
"On the second occasion, our cameras picked the animal up approximately 8 metres into the rock face."
"Our firefighters could not access the animal within the rock as the gap was too narrow (approximately 12 inches at the widest part and then getting narrower), the animal was too deep into the rock face, and we could not drill into the rock without damaging the structural integrity of the area."
A fundraising page set up to help the volunteers replace equipment that has been damaged during the operation has now reached almost £10,000.
Its description reads: "The boys have had various items of expensive equipment broken and destroyed throughout this rescue misson including jack hammers and Stihl saws etc ."
"The tools are the volunteers own and used for their small businesses and are expensive to replace. "
"I'm asking everyone to donate and help these guys replace their personal equipment and help with expenses that have occurred through this mission."
