Wild macaque steals produce from Thai vendors
A wild macaque stole food from vendors at a market in Thailand.
The male primate climbed down from a nearby building and plucked fresh fruit and vegetables from stalls at the Kaset Suwaphan Muang Thong Food Market in Ang Thong province on October 2.
It clambered out of reach on the roof to enjoy its meal.
Vendors said the monkey had appeared at the market around two days ago. They suspected it arrived from neighbouring Lopburi or Ayutthaya after hitching a ride on a vegetable delivery truck.
Locals said macaques often visited the market for scraps during the annual Vegetarian Festival.
Macaques including the long-tailed and pig-tailed macaque are widespread in Thailand's forests, tourist spots, and urban areas.
However, human interaction such as feeding by tourists have led to population growth in some areas.
Thai authorities are scrambling to control the soaring numbers by catching, sterilizing, and relocating the monkeys to reduce conflicts with humans.
