Abah Abo, a farmer from Kampung Tembakau and his family cut rolling tobacco leaves at his home in Kampung Tembakau, Tanjungsari, Sumedang Regency, Indonesia, on October 4, 2024, Morning. Banyuresmi Village or better known as Tobacco Village in Tanjungsari, Sumedang Regency is located approximately 30 km from the center of Bandung City, this village is a traditional tobacco leaf processing center that has been going on for generations. The majority of residents in this village work as tobacco farmers.

The first step to process tobacco leaves is for farmers to sort the leaves based on their quality first. Then the tobacco leaves are rolled to be sliced thinly using a traditional knife called a 'Rajang' knife as shown in the video. After that, the tobacco leaves are arranged on trays to dry for approximately 20-30 days until they are ready to be sold.

During the dry season, residents of Tobacco Village work to process tobacco leaves. Trays of sun-dried tobacco fill the streets, rooftops and terraces. It takes about 20 days for the tobacco to dry properly if the weather is clear. Tobacco from this village is sent to various regions in West Java and exported to European markets such as Singapore, Malaysia, Germany and Sweden.

According to local tobacco farmers, in early October 2024 the price of tobacco in Sumedang Regency decreased by around 20 percent to IDR 100,000 ($6.46) per kilogram compared to the previous month which reached IDR 120,000 ($7.75) per kilogram, due to the large stock of tobacco after harvest. Currently, there are 70 million active smokers in Indonesia, most of whom are young people according to the Indonesian Health Survey.
