Floodwater surge leads to culvert’s collapse in Bhagalpur, Northern India

A culvert (small bridge) on Pirpainti-Babupur Road collapsed due to overflow of floodwaters Bhagalpur on 3 October, Thursday morning.

The incident occurred near Mustafapur Chukhandi/Chaumundi village in Kahalgaon sub-division of Bhagalpur district. This is the third incident of bridge collapse in the sub-division in last 15 days.
The culvert collapse has snapped connectivity of several villages, including Bakharpur, Govindpur, Babupur, Mohanpur, and Tilakdhari in different panchayats of Pirpainti block, from the Pirpainti Bazar, affecting nearly 4,000 residents.

Earlier, a 15-meter span of the bridge connecting Dominia Chowk Pirpainti and Babupur in Pirpainti block of Kahalgaon subdivision had collapsed on September 27 due to severe pressure of floodwaters and heavy rainfall resulting into soil erosion underneath the pillars and thereby collapse of the top structure of the bridge.

Arvind Prasad Gupta, executive engineer (EE) of road division, Road Construction Department (RCD), Bhagalpur, He said that the culvert washed away due to overflow of the floodwaters. He admitted that the culvert had snapped the road connectivity between Pirpainti to Jharkhand via Babupur.
