US: Massive Fire Contained Near Lake Piru: 301 Acres Burned, 14% Contained
Piru, United States - October 03, 2024
The Ventura County Fire Department (VCFD) has reported a significant update on the wildfire blazing near Lake Piru, northeast of Piru city. After an intense battle through the night, fire officials announced that forward progress of the fire has been halted. The fire, which initially scorched 239 acres, has now grown to 301 acres but with containment efforts reaching 14%.
The firefight has been arduous, involving approximately 500 firefighters who have been working tirelessly to encircle the blaze. The steep and rugged terrain, coupled with limited access points, presented formidable challenges to the firefighting crews. Despite these obstacles, the unified command of VCFD and the US Forest Service has been resolute, focusing on increasing containment lines and safeguarding structures in the fire's path.
Throughout the night, water-dropping helicopters were crucial in targeting hotspots, aiding ground crews in their efforts to prevent further spread of the fire. The aerial support, combined with the strategic placement of firebreaks, has been instrumental in bringing the fire under control.
Earlier reports indicated the fire at 292 acres, still with 0% containment, highlighting the rapid escalation and the responsiveness of the firefighting units. As of the latest update, the significant increase in containment to 14% signifies a turning point in the operation, though the firefight is far from over.
