STORYLINE:
It's been nearly a year since the outbreak of the current round of Israeli-Hamas conflict.
Israel has been launching a large-scale offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip to retaliate against a Hamas rampage through the southern Israeli border on Oct. 7, 2023, during which about 1,200 people were killed and about 250 taken hostage.
The Palestinian death toll from the ongoing Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip has risen above 41,000, according to the Gaza-based health authorities.
SOUNDBITE 1 (Arabic): JORY AL-ATTAR, Palestinian
"I was in Rafah and suddenly our tent was bombed. When I opened my eyes, I saw raging flames and the remains of my relatives. My brother Mohammed saved me even though he was injured. And I saw my mother, aunt, uncle, grandfather and brother torn to pieces. At night, I am afraid of the sounds of the missiles which sounds like I'll be killed as happened to my family."
SOUNDBITE 2 (Arabic): SHARIF ATALLAH, Palestinian
"The destruction we saw in Deir al-Balah is indescribable. We uphold the peace. People have lost everything in this war. We hope that the war ends soon because every beginning has its end. I hope peace prevails and reconciliation takes place because we are very tired. Frankly speaking, life has become meaningless without water, food, basics of life and source of income. How can we live in such a situation?"
SOUNDBITE 3 (Arabic): IBRAHIM NASSER, Palestinian
"The scale of the destruction is indescribable and this is the first time in my life that I have seen such destruction similar to action movies. Can you imagine that the community you live in and the streets are all destroyed? The war has affected all the aspects of life, such as electricity, water, food, drink and shoes, etc. We get water once a week and every time we have to stand in line and my turn might come after 40 people. I hope that the war ends and peace prevails because we have suffered so many wars, destruction and sabotage."
Xinhua News Agency correspondents reporting from Gaza, Palestine.
