STORYLINE:

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic took a test ride on the Serbian section of the Belgrade-Budapest high-speed railway on Thursday.

The 350-km long Belgrade-Budapest railway is under construction by a consortium of Chinese companies.

The Serbian section of the railway, from the capital Belgrade to Subotica, near the Serbia-Hungary border, is around 180 km, and a trip will take just one hour and 10 minutes.

Vucic said the Serbian section of the railway is expected to be fully completed in late November.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Serbian): ALEKSANDAR VUCIC, President of Serbia:
"Today we have traversed 108 km of newly built railway, which was completed a year ahead of schedule. We are not used to that, but miracles do happen."

Vucic said the railway was built according to the highest standards, with measures in place to minimize noise and ensure well-designed stations along the route.

SOUNDBITE 2 (Serbian): ALEKSANDAR VUCIC, President of Serbia:
"As you can see, the Chinese workers, working in three shifts, diligently and hard, together with Serbian workers, Serbian companies, and subcontractors, managed to complete this great task."

SOUNDBITE 3 (Serbian): ALEKSANDAR VUCIC, President of Serbia:
"I am proud of our Serbia, I am proud of what we have done, I am proud of everything we have created, and that is something that no one will be able to erase. This is an incredible success; this is not built every year."

The Belgrade-Budapest railway is one of the flagship projects of the Belt and Road Initiative in Europe, thanks to cooperation between China, Hungary and Serbia.
