A quick-thinking mother saved her daughter when she choked on snacks while she was playing.

Wanida was in the living room with her two-year-old toddler, Charm, playing behind her when the kid walked up to her crying in Lampang, Thailand, on October 5.

CCTV footage shows the parent checking on her child and realising the girl could not breathe. She stood up behind Charm and carried her to perform a Heimlich manoeuvre.

She thrust on her stomach area repeatedly and shook the youngster to dislodge the food from her throat.

Wanida shouted for help before her worried husband arrived. Seconds later, Charm spat it out and cried when her airways had cleared.

The mother said: ‘Charm could not speak and was stuttering. I immediately thought something was blocking her airway.'

Wanida added that she learned how to perform first aid technique as she let her child eat independently.

She said: ‘We follow baby-led weaning, so I studied how to do the Heimlich. I never knew I would have to use it on my daughter.'

Wanida took Charm to the doctor later that day for a health check.

She said: ‘There only saliva and little food on the floor when we did the Heimlich. The doctor thinks she might have swallowed most of it. There was also no solid object on her poop.'

Baby-led weaning (BLW) is an approach to introducing solid foods to infants that emphasizes self-feeding rather than spoon-feeding.

The Heimlich manoeuvre, also known as abdominal thrusts, is a first-aid technique used to help someone choking due to a foreign object obstructing their airway. It is designed to expel the object by creating pressure in the abdomen.
