This is the terrifying moment a wild elephant caused carnage as it raided a villager's home.

The homeowner heard a loud noise from the back of her house and discovered the jumbo rummaging through her belongings in search of food early in the morning in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, on September 26.

Footage shows the animal using its trunk to ransack the place, throwing items on the ground, and even knocking cabinets over.

It managed to grab some bread and opened a water jar to drink. No one was hurt in the encounter.

The filmer said she managed to scare the beast away and it turned around and walked back towards the nearby woodland.

Elephants are known for their voracious appetite. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) says that elephants need to eat up to 150kg of food per day—the equivalent of 375 tins of baked beans.

Conservationists in Thailand say that wild elephants—up to 3,500 of them—have even developed a taste for human food, preferring to rummage through homes and vehicles for snacks instead of the bland leaves they find in the forest.
