Tunis, Tunisia - October 06, 2024

Tunisia's President Kais Saied, accused by civil society of an "authoritarian drift," was re-elected with 90.7% of the vote, the electoral authority of the Maghreb country, which has a population of 12 million, announced on Monday.

Participation in Sunday's elections reached 28.8%, marking the lowest level since democracy was established in 2011.

Of the 17 initial candidates, only two were authorized to run against Kais Saied. The other 15 were disqualified by the ISIE electoral authority due to alleged irregularities.
