Switzerland: UNHCR adopts China-proposed draft resolution on women rights
Geneva, Switzerland - October 09, 2024
The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHCR) unanimously passed on Wednesday a draft resolution proposed by China, representing Denmark, France, Kenya, and Mexico, on marking the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, with 112 countries sponsored.
The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, adopted at the 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, are a landmark of global efforts to strive for gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls. The social status of women has risen significantly in the past 30 years, while to fully implement the Beijing Declaration is still challenging. The resolution aims to reaffirm the spirit of the Beijing Declaration, and reflects a collective commitment to promoting gender equality, and addressing all challenges in cooperation, said Chen Xu, China's permanent representative to the UN Office in Geneva and other international organizations in Switzerland.
Nicole Ameline, a member of the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), shared her appreciation for the resolution, as well as China’s effort to protect women’s rights.

"It's a very, very great event and we are very happy with that because it's not only a commemoration and anniversary. It is a vision of the future, and I must say that the CEDAW committee is totally in this vision of a new step, a new push, a new impetus at the global level, and we are very happy for China and the whole of the states which are committed on this very important issue. And personally, I consider that it is the best news of the day.";
