US, Los Angeles: Lakewood SWAT Standoff Suspect Leads Deputies on Pursuit
Los Angeles, United States - October 08, 2024
10/08/2024 09:30 pm (GMT-0700) | LAKEWOOD, Calif. – A standoff between the Los Angeles County Sheriff SWAT team and a suspect escalated into a high-speed pursuit late Wednesday night in Lakewood. According to initial reports, the incident began around 9:30 p.m. when Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies confronted the suspect for unknown reasons in the parking lot of a Vons grocery store located at 4226 Woodruff Avenue near Harvey Way.
The suspect, who had been in a standoff with law enforcement for several hours, was initially surrounded by deputies. Less-than-lethal tactics were deployed in an attempt to subdue him. However, the suspect managed to flee the scene, leading authorities on a high-speed chase.
The pursuit ended when the SWAT team’s BearCat and a patrol car blocked the suspect's vehicle on Cason Street next to Heartwell Park (6213 E. Parkcrest St). Additional less-than-lethal measures were used after the suspect remained in his vehicle. The suspect, seen in the KNN video holding a dog by the neck, attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended following further non-lethal force. He was transported to a hospital for evaluation.
The dog that fled into a nearby park during the incident was believed to not be captured despite efforts by someone familiar with both the suspect and the animal to retrieve it.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident.
