STORYLINE:
The Van Gogh Museum in the Dutch capital of Amsterdam is hosting a new exhibition titled "Long live Impressionism!" to mark the 150th anniversary of Impressionism.
A collection of 139 masterpieces by iconic late 19th-century Impressionists, including Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Camille Pissarro, and Paul Cezanne, is on display from Oct. 11, 2024 to Jan. 26, 2025.
The exhibition features some of their finest works from both public and private Dutch collections.
SOUNDBITE (English): ROSA DE CARVALHO, Senior curator of Van Gogh Museum
"Yes, we have a new exhibition in the Van Gogh Museum. It's called 'Vive l'impressionnisme! (Long live Impressionism!).' And in this exhibition, we celebrate all the beautiful impressionists' (works) we have in Dutch collections. They come from all over the Netherlands, and they are en masse in our museum in Amsterdam, (for visitors) to see everything in one place. Vincent Van Gogh himself was quite influenced by impressionists, and this is a good example. This is a pastel by Edgar (Degas) that we bought a few years ago. Van Gogh went to see the Edgar exhibition in Paris, and he was struck by the pastels and by the technique of placing very little colored lines altogether, almost like a tapestry. He sort of tried to mimic the effects in his own art when he was still experimenting with what kind of modern painting he wanted to be."
