Elderly driver ploughs pedestrians on busy road after mistaking accelerator for brake
On October 10, around 7:40 AM in Lianjiang, Guangdong, a black sedan collided with motorcycles, electric bicycles, and pedestrians while reversing due to driver error, resulting in seven people injured and several vehicles damaged.
Surveillance footage shows the black car reversing when it suddenly accelerated, hitting nearby vehicles and pedestrians. The scene became chaotic, with several pedestrians knocked to the ground.
Lianjiang Public Security Bureau responded promptly, dispatching officers to the scene. The police assisted in transporting the injured to the hospital and took the driver, Zheng Mouyou (a 69-year-old local from Lianjiang), into custody for investigation.
Preliminary findings ruled out alcohol or drug impairment. The cause of the accident was initially attributed to the driver mistakenly pressing the accelerator instead of the brake, but further investigation is needed.
The accident resulted in seven injuries: one person suffered a head injury, another had a back injury, and five others had minor scrapes. Fortunately, none of the injuries were life-threatening, and all victims are receiving further treatment at the hospital.
