Gaza - October 06, 2024

Storyline:
The Palestinian death toll from the ongoing Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip has risen to 42,065 since October 7, 2023, the Gaza-based health ministry said in a statement released on Thursday.

Over the past 24 hours, Israel's military operations in Gaza killed 55 people and wounded 166 others, bringing the total injuries to nearly 98,000, said the ministry.

At least 28 Palestinians were killed, and more than 54 others were injured on Thursday afternoon in an Israeli airstrike on a school sheltering displaced people in the central Gaza Strip, according to the ministry.

The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) said on social media platform X that its teams responded to the casualties following the Israeli army’s targeting of Rafida School located near the PRCS headquarters in the city of Deir al-Balah.

Medics said ambulance crews and the civil defense apparatus recovered the dead bodies, including children and women, some of whom were dismembered.

Meanwhile, the Israeli military said on Thursday in a statement that it carried out a "precise strike" targeting militants inside "a command and control center" in the compound of the Rafida School in Deir al-Balah.

The center was used "to plan and execute terrorist attacks against the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) troops and the State of Israel," the military said.

The IDF said in a statement that its troops have been carrying out military operations around Rafah in southern Gaza neighboring Egypt, and the Israeli army is conducting combat missions in the Jabalia area in northern Gaza, where they exchanged fire at close range and killed two armed personnel.

The IDF and the Israeli National Security Service (Shin Bet) said in a joint statement released on Thursday that the Israeli army had launched an airstrike on the command and control center of armed personnel in Jabalia, killing 12 militants from the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ).

The Al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas's military wing, claimed Thursday that its fighters ambushed an Israeli army mechanized infantry company east of the Jabalia camp, inflicting casualties among Israeli soldiers.

United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) Executive Director Catherine Russell said in a statement on Thursday that all parties have agreed to implement a humanitarian "temporary ceasefire" in designated areas of the Gaza Strip, to facilitate the second phase of polio vaccination campaign, which is scheduled to begin next Monday.

She said this round of vaccination will reach about 590,000 children under the age of 10 in the Gaza Strip.

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on August 29 that Israel and Hamas agreed to implement temporary ceasefires starting September 1 to allow the vaccination campaign, as a 10-month-old was diagnosed with the disease earlier in the month, which was the first case of polio that appeared in Gaza in 25 years.

The WHO said on September 13 that the first phase of the vaccination campaign has been a "massive success."
