China: China accelerates upgrading of EV charging facilities to support supercharging

China accelerates upgrading of EV charging facilities to support supercharging
[Voice_over]
In China, Huawei's super-fast charging piles are landing in more cities across the country allowing drivers to top up their EVs with one kilometer of autonomy per second, or roughly 480 kilometers in about eight minutes.
The reduced time is made possible by liquid-cooled ultra-high power charging technology, which removes excess heat generated during the charging process, resulting in a lightning-fast charge.
A ride-hailing driver in the southern city of Shenzhen said it can take up to 50 minutes to fully charge his car's battery with a normal charger.
But with the new super-fast piles, his wait time has been cut in half.

Zhang Long, Ride-hailing driver:
"It charged rather slowly with the old charger. If I use the supercharging piles, it only takes about 20 minutes to get fully charged."

The plan now is to install even more of the 600-kilowatt hour piles in locations across the country, or to upgrade existing infrastructure.

He Bo, Vice president, Digital energy company:
"Due to the technical limitations, many old cars and charging piles can only support slow charge or are not available for supercharging. In the future, these charging facilities need to go through tech upgrades."

Data from China's National Energy Administration shows that by the end of July, there were more than 10 million charging piles across the country, an increase of 53 percent year on year.
