Gaza Strip - Recent

The Palestinian death toll from the ongoing Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip has risen to 42,126 since Oct 7, 2023, the Gaza-based health ministry said in a statement on Friday.

Over the past 24 hours, Israel's military operations in Gaza killed 61 people and wounded 231 others, bringing the total injuries to 98,117, said the ministry.

According to Palestinian media reports, the Israeli military has been carrying out continuous airstrikes on the northern and central areas of the Gaza Strip on Friday, killing at least 40 people. Among them, the attack on the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza has caused more than 20 fatalities and dozens of injuries.

The Israeli military also attacked two refugee camps in the central Gaza Strip on the same day, killing many people. As of Saturday, there has been no response from the Israeli side.

Meanwhile, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that its air force intercepted a rocket fired from northern Gaza on Friday, with no casualties.

Al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, claimed responsibility for destroying an Israeli armored personnel carrier in northern Gaza near Beit Lahia, injuring some Israeli soldiers.

On Friday, the IDF announced that, based on the situation, additional battalions are being deployed to the Central Command to carry out their defense missions. These troops will enhance the defense of local communities and strengthen security fences, while also preparing for various scenarios.

The IDF Central Command is one of the IDF's four regional commands, primarily responsible for conducting military operations in the West Bank.

Philippe Lazzarini, commissioner-general of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), said on Friday that the Israeli parliament is preparing to pass a legislative proposal aimed at banning the presence and operations of UNRWA in Israeli territory.

Lazzarini said such action was a violation of international law and warned of potentially severe consequences if the bill is approved, including the possible collapse of humanitarian activities in the Gaza Strip and the cessation of education and basic healthcare services in the West Bank.

He also highlighted that such a move would contravene Israel's obligations under the United Nations Charter and international law.

Multiple media outlets in the Middle East reported that Israel announced on Thursday that it would seize the property of the UNRWA located in East Jerusalem.

According to a UN spokesman on Friday, aid entering Gaza is at its lowest level in months, and no one in Gaza has received food parcels this month due to constrained access of aid supplies.

Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for the UN secretary-general, said the World Food Programme (WFP) reports that critical aid lifelines into northern Gaza have been cut off.

The UN Children's Fund says sudden displacement orders in northern Gaza are once again forcing tens of thousands of vulnerable children onto the roads, warning that children are being condemned time and again to unimaginable suffering, horror and death.

The spokesman said the latest developments in North Gaza governorate have forced the suspension of protection services, the closure of malnutrition treatment services benefiting about 1,000 children, and the shutting down of five temporary learning spaces for more than 750 children.

In the West Bank, OCHA reports that recurrent operations by Israeli forces over the past year have caused major damage to critical infrastructure, including systems critical to water, sanitation and hygiene. As a result, access to clean water and sanitation services has been compromised for nearly 92,000 people in the West Bank.
