Lebanon: Death toll from Israeli attacks in Lebanon climbs to 2,229
Beirut, Lebanon - Recent
Lebanon has been attacked 9,588 times by the Israeli army since the outbreak of the latest round of Palestinian-Israeli conflict in October 2023, resulting in 2,229 deaths and 10,380 injuries in Lebanon alone, according to statistics released by the Lebanese government on Friday.
The Israeli army continued to strike Hezbollah targets in Lebanon on Friday. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) issued a statement saying that the 205th Reserve Armored Brigade of the IDF entered southern Lebanon, destroyed Hezbollah's tunnels and other infrastructure, and killed several armed personnel. The Israeli Air Force attacked a building close to the IDF in southern Lebanon, with armed personnel inside.
Hezbollah continued to launch rockets at Israel on Friday. Air defense alarms were sounded in many places in Israel. Some rockets were intercepted by the Israeli army, and Israeli fighter jets also attacked Hezbollah's rocket launchers.
On the same day, Caretaker Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati said that the Lebanese government urged the UN Security Council to pass a resolution on an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon issued a statement on Friday confirming that two explosions occurred near a UNIFIL sentry tower in Naqoura, southern Lebanon, injuring two peacekeepers. This is the second time within 48 hours that the UNIFIL headquarters in Naqoura has been affected by explosions.
Multiple parties strongly condemned Israel's actions on the same day in response to the consecutive attacks on the UNIFIL.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that the Israeli army's attack on the UN base, which caused injured peacekeepers, was a violation of international humanitarian law. Peacekeepers must be protected by all parties to the conflict.
According to AFP, French President Emmanuel Macron said that Israel's attack on UNIFIL peacekeepers was totally unacceptable. France condemned the action and said it could not tolerate and would not accept such a thing happening again.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez strongly condemned Israel's attack on UNIFIL, calling it unacceptable. He also said that given what is happening in the Middle East, it is vital that the international community stop supplying weapons to the Israeli government.
The Lebanese government has so far set up 1,032 refugee centers to accommodate displaced people, of which 837 have reached their full capacity. Currently, around 187,000 displaced people are staying in the official refugee centers.
Since Sept. 23, the Israeli military has been carrying out an extensive air campaign in Lebanon, dubbed "Arrows of the North," in a dangerous escalation with Hezbollah.
Since October last year, Hezbollah and Israeli forces have been exchanging fire along the Lebanese-Israeli border, stoking fears of a wider conflict as the war between Hamas and Israel continues in Gaza.
