Abrasion on the North Coast of West Java is occurring in Mayangan Village, Subang Regency, which is one of the most severely affected villages. If not prevented soon, this village will be lost to sea water. The area of the village used to be about 300 hectares with 1000 people living here, but about 70% of the rice fields, ponds and settlements have been lost due to rising sea levels. The majority of people in this village used to work as farmers but since the rice fields have been submerged by rising sea levels they have switched professions to become fishermen. The affected land area in this village is about 300 hectares. A number of villagers are trying to stop the abrasion by planting mangroves, which have proven to be quite effective in preventing the waves from hitting their houses directly.
