Hurricane Milton's landfall in Florida brought destruction and highlighted an increasingly worrying phenomenon: the generation of powerful tornadoes in the context of tropical storms. According to an NBC News report, these phenomena were caused by supercells, which are known for their rotating updrafts.
In St. Lucie County, the impact was tragic, with five people killed after a tornado passed through a retirement community. This event represented almost a third of the 17 deaths reported so far due to the hurricane. Florida, accustomed to tropical storms, is now facing an outbreak of tornadoes that has emerged as a leading cause of mortality and damage.
The tornado that passed through Palm Beach Gardens reached winds of up to 225 km/h, a force unprecedented in the southern region of the state. Donal Harrigan, a meteorologist with the NWS in Miami, told NBC News: “This is the first EF-3 on record in our area of ​​Florida from Lake Okeechobee southward.”
