Rare chickens with ridiculously long tails amazed residents in a village in Thailand.

The Onagadori breed of bird was hatched from eggs by neighbour Chalermchai Maneeboon, 41, who received them as gifts from a Japanese friend.

Now, the two male chickens, Nadech and Thong Kham, live on his farm with his family, attracting attention from passersby with their unusual feathers.

Footage shows Nadech looking like a mythical creature due to its 11.1 (3.4 metres) tail. Its body feathers averaged 3.3ft (1 metre). The other bird Thong Kham has a shorter 6.6ft (2 metres) tail, although is still exceptionally long compared to normal.

Both birds roam the property as free range chickens but their favourite spot is by the wooden perch under a shed.

Chalermchai said: ‘I previously worked in Japan and returned to Thailand to build a house and marry my wife.

‘I was looking for a new job and considered raising beautiful exotic animals. My Japanese friend shared my interest in raising chickens and gave me some eggs during my visit.'

The animal lover said he brought home 12 eggs and paid for their travel expenses. The enthusiast incubated the eggs at home and hatched two males and five females.

The chickens were fed pellets and thrived, with businessmen from other countries, such as Laos, offering to buy three chickens for 50,000 baht (1,147.64 GBP).

He said: ‘His friend also asked to buy chickens. He reserved eggs and chicks.

‘Not many Thai people raise Onagadori. Most farmers raise fighting cocks or chicken for meats. They might think it is difficult to raise them, but they are actually very easy to care for.'

Aside from pellet feed, he said he also gives them watermelon, cucumber, rice and fermented fish broth which is their favourite.

He said: ‘The long feathers require special attention because they grow very long each year, up to 3.3ft (1 metre)

‘I bathe them once every three months. The feathers has to dry to prevent tangling. I feed them every morning and evening while the water change is every two days.'

Chalermchai said he has a coop with wire mesh to protect at night against birds, rats, and snakes.

He said: ‘Chicks cost 1,000 baht (22.95 GBP) to 2,000 baht (45.91) while five-month-old chickens I offer for 5,000 baht (114.76 GBP) to 7,000 baht each (160.67 GBP).'

Onagadori chickens are a rare and highly prized breed of ornamental chicken from Japan, renowned for their extraordinarily long tail feathers, which can grow continuously throughout their life, reaching lengths of more than 33ft (10 metres). The name 'Onagadori' means 'long-tailed chicken' in Japanese.
