Hong Kong authorities detonate Japanese WWII bomb found on sea bottom
Hong Kong police have safely detonated a World War II bomb found in eastern waters.
Authorities confirmed the device was a 500-pound aerial bomb from WWII, discovered in waters off the eastern New Territories.
A resident reported the ordnance on September 15, locating it at a depth of 43ft (13 metres) east of Shek Ngau Chau in Sai Kung, Hong Kong.
Officials confirmed the bomb's origin and carried out a controlled explosion at 2:46 pm on October 8.
A video captured by the police showed divers approaching the bomb and the resulting underwater detonation, which created a large plume on the water's surface.
The operation involved multiple units, including explosive ordnance disposal, marine police, and drone teams. Police advised residents to report any suspicious items and warned against handling them.
