Distant naval fort appears to levitate in Fata Morgana illusion off Kent, UK
A distant naval fort appeared to levitate in the sky in a Fata Morgana mirage seen off the Kent, UK coast yesterday (October 13).
Knock John fort is situated around 17 miles off the coast of the Isle of Sheppey and appeared to float above the horizon due to the rare optical illusion.
A fata morgana is caused when light rays bend over long distances due to temperature changes.
Footage filmed from Warden Bay shows historic paddle steamer Waverley and smaller X-Pilot tourist boat heading out to sea, but with Knock John appearing to be hovering in the sky above them.
Knock John fort was decommissioned in 1945 and maintained until May 1956 when it was abandoned.
